"Surzhyk" is an immersive documentary project directed by Marcin Banasiak, unveiling the profound impact of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Over the past 1.5 years, Marcin has immersed himself in the stories of ordinary Ukrainians, navigating de-occupied territories, frontline communities, and cities demonstrating remarkable resilience in the aftermath of war.
This feature-length documentary, currently a work in progress, unfolds through five poignant chapters, each set in a distinct location. From the once-besieged city of Kharkiv to the resilient town of Shevchenkove, "Surzhyk" provides a raw and unfiltered perspective on the aftermath of war.
In Hroza, a small village in eastern Ukraine, a missile struck a café, resulting in one of the deadliest single incidents for civilians since February 2022. The attack occurred during a funeral reception, claiming the lives of 59 people. This heartbreaking event adds a layer of depth to the narrative, underscoring the devastating impact of war on ordinary lives.
Moving to Kherson, the city faced additional challenges when it was flooded due to the Kakhovka incident. Occupiers blew up a dam on the Dnipro River, affecting the city and its residents. Kherson now stands as a symbol of resilience, rebuilding in the aftermath of both occupation and environmental disaster.
Kamyanka, situated in the Izyum region, witnessed another grim chapter as the theater of a significant war crime. The discovery of 447 bodies, including 414 civilians and 22 servicemen, speaks to the atrocities committed in this town. "Surzhyk" sheds light on the untold stories and resilience found in the wake of such devastating events.
The teaser, recently released, offers a poignant preview of the forthcoming documentary. Meticulously edited by Mishel Lades and featuring a soulful soundscape by Dmytro Oleksiuk, the teaser provides a powerful glimpse into the emotional journey that lies ahead.
As the project evolves, "Surzhyk" aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the human cost of war and the strength that emerges from unimaginable adversity. This documentary is not just a visual exploration but a tribute to the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian nation. Stay tuned for updates as the project continues to unfold.
